Pictures at an Exhibition

The Toledo Symphony opens its 80th anniversary season with three-time Grammy Award winner Branford Marsalis. An uncompromising artist as both a jazz and classical musician, Branford Marsalis performs Gabriel Prokofiev’s Saxophone Concerto, a modern concerto of our time that connects to the tradition of the orchestral repertoire. Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition is a musical depiction of a tour of an exhibition of works by architect and painter Viktor Hartmann put on at the Imperial Academy of Saint Petersburg, following his sudden death in the previous year. Each movement of the suite is based on an individual work, some of which are lost.
