A Ravel Birthday Celebration

In honor of Maurice Ravel’s 150th birthday, Toledo Symphony musicians perform three works that have become chamber music standards. The Introduction and Allegro for Harp, Flute, Clarinet, and String Quartet is one of Ravel’s most colorful and evocative pieces, while his String Quartet, sensual in language though traditional in form, is considered to be his earliest masterpiece. The Piano Trio, inspired by sources as far removed as Basque dance and Malaysian poetry, is a celebration of rhythmic verve and technical mastery, and is one of the most performed trios in the repertoire. It is a piece for which our Shigeru Kawai piano, donated to us by Craig Whitaker, is uniquely well-suited. Program Notes
