Toledo Symphony School of Music

TSSM is one of the premiere providers of private instrument instruction in Northwest Ohio, specializing in the Suzuki method of learning. Founded by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, the worldwide music education movement known as the Suzuki Method embraces the total development of the child. This method closely follows the parallel of language learning with parents playing a crucial role. Learning takes place in an environment of co-operation between teacher, parent, and child. Parents attend each lesson with the student, taking notes and then guiding them through their practice at home - they become the 'home teacher.' With this approach, "the potential of every child is unlimited."

Why Study at TSSM?

  • Our teachers are professional musicians, many of whom perform with the Toledo Symphony.
  • Our educators receive extra training in developing young musicians. These skills help our teachers work more effectively with students of all ages.
  • Our Suzuki teachers receive special training and are registered with the Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA).
  • TSSM families receive free or discounted tickets to many TSO events.
  • TSSM students perform with the Toledo Symphony at venues such as the Peristyle stage, Valentine Theatre, Fifth Third Field, and Huntington Center.
  • We offer multiple recital opportunities throughout the year.
  • Our collaborative atmosphere allows students to work with many teachers, through group classes (a pillar of Suzuki education) and other activities.

Our Values

Our teachers strive to live up to our values in every lesson. We strongly believe in:

INCLUSION

Every child can, it is up to us to figure out how.

TEAMWORK

The art of studying an instrument involves many participants, not just the student and the teacher. We must give our parents tools to feel confident in their role as “home teacher” and help them create a nurturing learning environment. This will set the student up for success. Our collaborative atmosphere allows students to work with many teachers, through group classes and other activities.

ADAPTATION

Every student is different, every teacher is different, every situation is different. It is important to find the right “fit” for each child.

MUSICIANSHIP

Ability is not determined by what piece you play, rather how you play that piece.

DETERMINATION

Learning an instrument is not easy, TSSM teachers help students embrace the challenge with joy.
